Thanks to each of these games’ well-deserved success, the 25-year-old series exits the decade carrying more accolades and thousands more dedicated fans than when it entered. Despite its absence from the two preceding console generations, the series was back, beating its chest and boasting incredible quality without missing a beat.ĭonkey Kong Country Returns is a fantastic platformer, and its follow-up in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is even better. Boy, did it deliver everything fans had hoped for. Before we knew it, Donkey Kong Country was right back in our lives with the aptly titled Donkey Kong Kong Country Returns, one of the Wii’s last great games with its late 2010 release. At E3 2010, its fortune reversed when Nintendo pulled the curtain back on Retro Studios’ newest project.
Īt the beginning of the decade, the Donkey Kong Country franchise had been missing in action for nearly 15 years. However, that work is nowhere near done - so, so many future classics came out over the last several years, including an excellent 2D platforming revival in Donkey Kong Country Returns and its sequel, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. We have already focused on some of the greatest of the great, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Nintendo has had a very strong 10 years with tons of games worth spotlighting. This game also offers a New Mode which helps you find hidden items and extends your health.Today is the final day of the 2010s, an excellent chance for some reflection on the media we enjoyed the most over the decade. You do, however, have to press the charge or pound button repeatedly in some situations. On the 3DS version of the game, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, you don't need to use motion controls.
Visuals are generally large and bright, although on occasion you are fired into the background and have to perform platforming moves in a miniature size that is hard to see. Both methods use motion controls for the "Ground Pound" move. One uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, while the other uses the Wii Remote held sideways. You can choose between two control schemes. On the 3DS version of the game there's an easier difficulty mode that increases your hearts to five and adds extra floating platforms to make jumps easier. You can also use the Super Guide if you die eight times, to get to the end of the level.
Both Donkey and Diddy can pound the ground to defeat enemies and unveil secret items. To avoid problems arising from differences in the players' skills, Diddy can hop on Donkey's back to take on a more passive role, while his jetpack can be used to make his partner's jumps easier. If one character dies they can be brought back by using the other character to hit a barrel that floats into view. In multiplayer mode, a second player is Diddy Kong. He not only offers more firepower but helps you jump higher. In single-player mode, you control Donkey Kong with Diddy Kong riding on his back. As well as reaching the end of each level at the right of the screen, you are also trying to find and collect the golden "KONG" letters and puzzle pieces. Along with the platforming jumps, bounces and attacks, there are levels where you ride minecarts and are fired from cannons. Play involves running and jumping as Donkey or Diddy Kong. It's a return to the side-on platforming of the classic Donkey Kong 64 in 1999. Donkey Kong Country Returns is a running, jumping and bashing game where you play Donkey Kong and other characters trying to reclaim their island from the Tiki Tak Tribe.
